A Big Moment for India: Netflix’s Live Action Short Film ‘Anuja’ Gets Nominated at the 97th Academy Awards®!

Netflix’s live-action short film ‘Anuja’ has been nominated for Best Live Action Short Film at the 97th Academy Awards®. Following the legacy of the Oscar-winning documentary short The Elephant Whisperers, Anuja continues Netflix’s tradition of bringing impactful Indian stories to the global stage.

This marks the first-ever Academy Award® nomination for director Adam J. Graves and producer Suchitra Mattai. It underscores Netflix’s commitment to spotlighting diverse voices and fresh talent.

Produced by a stellar team, including Mindy Kaling, Guneet Monga Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Suchitra Mattai, Anuja brings a heartfelt and authentic story of resilience to life. Executive producers Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Anita Bhatia, along with the Salaam Baalak Trust—a nonprofit empowering street and working children—lend authenticity to the narrative. Lead actor Sajda Pathan, a beneficiary of the trust, delivers a remarkable performance.

Producer Guneet Monga Kapoor expressed,
“We are incredibly honored for this nomination at the 97th Oscars. ‘Anuja’ is a tribute to the indomitable spirit of the youth served by Salaam Baalak Trust. Despite immense challenges, their resilience inspires us all. Adam J. Graves and Suchitra Mattai have poured their hearts into this film. This recognition highlights the power of collaboration and storytelling. We’re thrilled to share Anuja’s message with a global audience.”

Priyanka Chopra Jonas, on the nomination, shared,
“‘Anuja’ being nominated for an Oscar is an incredible moment. This film beautifully showcases love, family, and resilience in the most authentic way. I’m proud to have been part of this journey alongside such talented creatives. Adam J. Graves’ vision and the brilliant performances of Sajda Pathan and Ananya Shanbhag have made this story unforgettable. It’s a testament to the transformative power of storytelling.”

Monika Shergill, VP of Content, Netflix India, said,
“It’s an honor to bring a homegrown film like ‘Anuja’ to audiences worldwide. This story of resilience and redemption is deeply moving and resonates universally. Congratulations to the phenomenal team for this much-deserved recognition.”
